A few weeks ago I posted some pics of my favorite vintage fairy tale books-
Now pics of my pride and joy: my Sheilah Beckett collection!
I have always been a huge Sheilah Beckett fan. She is an illustrator, famous for her work in the 1940s and 50s. Unfortunately, not much was written about her and it was hard to find any info about her. I knew she was born in the 1920s, and I didn’t know if she was still with us.
A few years ago, I asked someone with connections in the illustration field (Leif Peng from http://todaysinspiration.blogspot.com/ ) if they knew if she was alive or any other information about her. A few months later he contacted me to tell me she was alive and well in upper New York! At 100 years old, she draws and paints every day, even using a Wacom tablet.
I got to talk to her on the phone and was over the moon.
Little did I know, my husband secretly contacted her and commissioned her to do an original gouache painting for me for my birthday. The subject is my favorite fairytale Beauty and the Beast. She was 97 years old at the time and she still painted like that. I burst into tears when my husband gave this to me. It’s my most valued possession. She signed ‘For Kathryn’ at the bottom.
About a year later, I actually went to visit her and her wonderful son. She signed my copy of ‘12 Dancing Princesses’ and served us coffee cake! She is so sweet.
I hope that a book will be written about her work. I am very interested in doing it myself, but I have no idea where to start or who to contact. (Kickstarter? idk) I think people would love to see more of her work and she deserves the praise!—
